Abstract Clarence Oliver LaGrone was the first African-American student at the Cranbrook Academy of Art, where he studied with Carl Milles starting in the fall of 1941. Upon completing his studies at Cranbrook, Oliver worked a variety of jobs in order to support his family, including at the Ford Rouge Plant. Elizabeth Wallace McLean was the first grandchild of George G. and Ellen Scripps Booth, founders of the Cranbrook Educational Community. Elizabeth was the first of seven students at Brookside School, where she studied until the 10th grade graduating from Kingswood in 1934. The collection contains clippings, photographs, programs, and scrapbooks focusing on the early years of Kingswood and Brookside schools.

Wilderness Expedition Press Coverage Records

Abstract

The Wilderness Expedition which began in 1970, was designed as a yearly outdoor excursion for sophomore students at the Cranbrook Kingswood Upper School. In 1993, a blizzard struck the Great Smokey Mountains National Forrest leaving one-hundred and seventeen Cranbrook faculty and students trapped for nearly four days. The collection comprises of clippings from over 80 national newspapers covering the event.
