History

From 1926-1969, Brookside School, Cranbrook School and Kingswood School each had individual Boards of Trustees. The trust indentures of each school were amended in December of 1969 to allow the formation of a single, unified Board of Trustees representing all three schools. The Board of Trustees of the Cranbrook Schools existed from 1970-1973. The various Cranbrook institutions (the Cranbrook Schools, the Cranbrook Academy of Art and Museum, and the Cranbrook Institute of Science) reorganized in 1973 to become the Cranbrook Educational Community, and the Cranbrook Schools Division (consisting of Kingswood School, Cranbrook School and Brookside School) was created. A single Board of Trustees for the CEC was formed with members representing each of the three aforementioned divisions. At that time, the Cranbrook Schools Board of Trustees became the Board of Governors, serving in an advisory capacity to the Cranbrook Schools Division. Standing committees associated with the Cranbrook Schools Board of Governors include an Executive Committee and those for Budget and Finance, Buildings and Grounds, Development, Education, Goals, Long Range Planning, and Nominating (for Members of the Schools Division, Board of Governors and CEC Board of Trustees), plus ad hoc committees on Religion and Middle School Reorganization, among others. Before 1984, there were individual committees for each of the three Schools. The two upper schools (Cranbrook and Kingswood) and the middle school were combined to form a single co-ed upper school with one faculty and administration in 1984. After that date, there were only two school committees, one for Brookside School and one representing the Cranbrook/Kingswood Upper School.
