Maurice B. Allen was born March 20, 1926, in Lansing, Michigan. He attended Western Michigan University before transferring to Notre Dame University in order to study engineering and naval science. He enlisted in the US Navy and served on a Navy destroyer in the Pacific Fleet. Allen ultimately graduated with a Bachelors in Architecture from the University of Michigan in 1950. Astrid Sampe studied at the Higher Industrial Art School of Stockholm and as an exchange student at the Royal Academy of Art in London.
